Jtutor: Free English Tutoring for young Japanese Students

A small, student-run non-profit organization that provides free English tutoring for young students who's first language is Japanese and need help with learning English.

Jtutor was established in August 2020 by two students through Instagram DM's, in which one student asked if they knew any organizations that tutors in-coming Japanese students, to which the other student replies no, jokingly stating that they can make their own. Now, Jtutor has over 50 hard-working students, that strive to help young Japanese students learn English.

Jtutor's story and goals:

Jtutor's mission is to help young Japanese students who are having trouble with English. Jtutor was established in 2020 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the costs of many things began to rise, including education and tuition costs. Many people who wanted to attend English cram schools were not able to due to the pandemic and higher tuition fees. Jtutor aims to solve this problem for Japanese students by providing free tutoring to young Japanese students. The founding members of Jtutor themselves understand the struggle of learning English and getting used to the culture and lifestyle of America, and by creating this program they hope to help students that are facing the same problems they did before.

Being a tutor at Jtutor:

I became a tutor at Jtutor starting in the summer of 2022. Being a tutor to a student taught me the work that is put into education and made me appreciate all of the efforts my current teachers and other educators are putting into us. The amount of preparing and constantly trying to make learning more fun and enjoyable for the student is more difficult than it seems, as every student has their own way of learning. Ultimately, volunteering at Jtutor has made me more grateful to the educators around me aswell as understanding how important education is to our society.
